Anderson Kate bakes a chocolate cake, places it in her goat cart, and sets off down the mountain to Grandmother’s house. Along the way, she stops to listen to her neighbors’ troubles—one needs a warm blanket, another has lost a dolly in the woods—and with each stop, she shares a piece of her cake. By the time Anderson reaches Grandmother’s house, the cake is all gone. “Grandmother, I baked you a cake, but on my way down the mountain, I gave it all away!” Pleased with Anderson’s giving heart, Grandmother places a beautiful quilt into the cart. “Oh, Grandmother,” Anderson says, “I know just the person who needs it…” And so a thread of giving—one neighbor offering exactly what the next neighbor needs—leads Anderson all the way back up the mountain.
